A STATEMENT OF UNITY

The Laurel County African-American Heritage Center stands in unity with people across the globe who are promoting the transformation of America's fundamentally prejudicial criminal justice system and equality for all. In addition to being horrified by the killings of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other members of Black communities across America by some corrupt police officers, and other racist entities, we firmly believe and adhere to the position that charity begins at home, that we must think globally and act locally.

As the center for black history, culture, leadership, & equality in ours and nearby counties in Eastern Kentucky, it is imperative that we bring together our partners and activate our mission to speak out about bias, inequality, and injustices in our communities. We are expanding and developing our programming to reduce the racial disparities that exist in our area in terms of housing, health care, education, entrepreneurship, and other quality of life factors.

In our effort to enhance equity, foster justice for all, and to honor the historical role of African Americans and their allies in our region in the fight for justice in Appalachia and throughout America, we will continue to stand with all who fight to end institutionalized hatred and bigotry. We intend to take concrete steps to eradicate prejudice, eliminate bias, and call upon our supporters to join us to stamp out racism, oppression, and discrimination throughout our county, our state, our nation, and the world.
